Make pixel art in three steps

Everything runs in your browser.

[01] STEP

Pick a canvas

16 × 16 for icons and Minecraft-style builds, up to 256 × 256 for scenes — or start from a template, an image or a photo.

[02] STEP

Draw and animate

Brush, fill, line, rectangle and mirror, with a picker, recent colours and undo. Add frames and see the previous one as an onion skin.

[03] STEP

Export

A PNG scaled up to 32× with hard edges, a sprite sheet of every frame, or a looping GIF — all with a transparent background.

A pixel art maker with nothing between you and the pixels

Pixel art is drawn one square at a time. This editor hands you the grid and the tools a pixel artist reaches for — fill, mirror, lines, frames — and exports exactly what you drew. No smoothing, no account.

Minecraft Pixel Art Maker

The grid you draw on here works the way Minecraft pixel art does: one square, one colour. No mods, no downloads, no desktop editor — it runs in your browser and exports a transparent PNG.

Why 16 × 16 is the Minecraft size

Minecraft's default block and item textures are 16 × 16 pixels, so most Minecraft pixel art — item icons, banners, block-sized faces — is planned on that grid. Start at 16 × 16 and your drawing matches the game's own resolution.

Need room for more detail? Pick 32, 64, 128 or 256, or type any width and height. Every tool works the same at every size, and Fit zooms the canvas to your screen.

The Blocks palette

Instead of a generic colour wheel, the Blocks palette gives you 16 colours picked to approximate familiar blocks — close matches, not the game's textures — so what you paint reads correctly next to the real thing. Anything else is one click away with the custom colour picker or a hex code.

  • Ground — grass, dirt, sand and oak planks
  • Stone — stone, cobblestone, coal and netherrack
  • Ores — diamond, gold, iron, emerald, lapis and redstone
  • Liquids — water and lava

Plan a block build

Pixel art maps one-to-one onto a build: every square on the canvas is one block in the world. Draw the design, count the squares row by row, and place blocks to match — the finished drawing doubles as your build plan.

Keep the palette short. “In this drawing” lists every colour you used; pick one and replace it everywhere to try a different block without redrawing.

Draw faster: fill, mirror and shapes

Fill (G) paints a whole connected area in one click. Mirror (M) copies every stroke across the vertical centre, so a face or a symmetrical sword takes half the work. Line (L) and rectangle (R) drag out straight edges; hold Shift for 45° lines and squares.

Alt + click picks a colour from the canvas with any tool, and right-click erases.

Animate it and export

Add frames under the canvas, duplicate one and change a few pixels, and onion skin shows the previous frame underneath. The slime and coin templates are animated, so you can see how a four-frame loop is built.

Download the current frame as a PNG, every frame as a sprite sheet, or a looping GIF — scaled up to 32× so a 16 × 16 icon comes out sharp at 512 px. Nothing is uploaded; the file is made in your browser.

SpriteGen is an independent tool and is not affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft.

Pixel art maker FAQ

What people ask before they start drawing.

[+] What is a pixel art maker?

A grid you fill in square by square. Every square is one pixel, so what you draw is exactly what exports — no blur. Pick a bigger export scale and every pixel becomes a crisp block.

[+] Can I use this for Minecraft pixel art?

Yes. Start on the 16 × 16 grid and switch the palette to Blocks: those colours are picked to match common blocks like grass, stone, diamond and redstone, so a finished drawing reads as a build plan. No game characters are bundled — you draw your own.

[+] Can I make animated pixel art?

Yes. Add frames under the canvas, duplicate one to change it slightly, and turn on onion skin to see the previous frame underneath. The preview plays at 1–24 FPS, and you can export a sprite sheet or an animated GIF.

[+] Can I turn a photo into pixel art?

Yes. Photo → pixel crops your image, shrinks it to 16–256 pixels, limits it to 2–32 colours or to one of the palettes, and can remove a plain background. It all happens in your browser; the photo is never uploaded.

[+] What is the difference between the pixel art maker and the sprite maker?

The pixel art maker is a canvas: you draw every pixel yourself. The sprite maker generates a finished sprite from a text description. One is a tool, the other is a generator.

[+] Is it really free?

Completely. It runs in your browser, needs no account and uses no credits. Only the AI tools on this site spend credits.

[+] What can I export?

The current frame as a PNG, every frame as a sprite sheet (one row or a grid), or a looping GIF at your preview speed. Scale 1× to 32× with nearest-neighbour, so the edges stay hard.
